How Scripture Study Can Change Your Life (The D&C Series Email 1 of 7)

How Scripture Study Can Change Everything

First off, scripture study isn’t just about reading words on a page—it’s about connecting with God, finding clarity in our struggles, and discovering the peace that only the Spirit can bring. The Doctrine and Covenants is such a powerful book because it’s filled with revelations for our time.

Casey Griffiths, author of The Scripture Central Commentary on the Doctrine and Covenants, said this “If you want to walk with Jesus Christ, read the New Testament. If you want to know the gospel of Jesus Christ, read the Book of Mormon. If you want to hear the words of Jesus Christ, read the Doctrine & Covenants.”

Isn’t this marvelous insight? I love this quote.

The Doctrine and Covenants is filled with teachings tailored to modern-day challenges, and it’s amazing to see how relevant they are. For example, D&C 42:61 promises us:
"If thou shalt ask, thou shalt receive revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge, that thou mayest know the mysteries and peaceable things—that which bringeth joy, that which bringeth life eternal."

Isn’t that incredible? The Lord is literally inviting us to ask for revelation—not just once, but over and over again! Scripture study is one of the most reliable ways we can receive that revelation because it puts us in a place where we’re listening to Him.

The Science of Scripture Study

Okay, now for the science nerd in me: did you know that scripture study has proven mental and emotional benefits? For instance:

  • Scripture study can reduce stress – Studies have shown that engaging in meaningful religious practices (like studying scriptures) releases dopamine in the brain, which makes you feel happier, more motivated, and less anxious.

  • It strengthens resilience – Harvard neurologist Dr. Michael Ferguson found that scripture study rewires neural pathways in your brain, improving your ability to process stress and emotional challenges.

  • It improves relationships – A study by Arnold Cole, Ed.D., and Pamela Ovwigho, Ph.D., found that people who study scriptures regularly (4+ times a week) experience drops in anger, loneliness, and bitterness by over 30%!

Isn’t it amazing how something as simple as reading scriptures can change your brain and your life?

The Spiritual Perspective

Beyond the science, Church leaders have shared some incredible insights into the spiritual power of scripture study:

  • President Russell M. Nelson said:
"The truths of the Book of Mormon [and scriptures] have the power to heal, comfort, restore, succor, strengthen, console, and cheer our souls."

  • Elder Jeffrey R. Holland explained:
"Studying and pondering the scriptures gives us spiritual strength and helps us navigate life’s trials with greater faith and courage."

  • Ezra Taft Benson taught:
"There is a power in the scriptures that will begin to flow into your lives the moment you begin a serious study of them."

How the Doctrine and Covenants Can Guide Us Today

The Doctrine and Covenants stands out because it’s filled with modern revelation. It addresses real-world questions like:

  • How can I hear God’s voice? (D&C 8:2)

  • What should I do when I’m unsure about a decision? (D&C 9:8–9)

  • How can I find peace in a chaotic world? (D&C 19:23)

Every time I read it, I’m amazed at how applicable these revelations are to the things I’m facing today. It’s like God is sitting beside me, offering advice and reassurance.

Why It Matters

If you’re not in the habit of regular scripture study, don’t stress—it’s never too late to start. Even just 10–15 minutes a day can make a huge difference. The key is consistency. As you read, you’ll notice subtle changes: you’ll feel calmer, more focused, and more connected to God.

One of my favorite quotes is from Boyd K. Packer:
"When you feel weak, discouraged, depressed, or afraid, open the Book of Mormon [or other scriptures] and read."

If you ever feel like life is too much, try it. You’d be amazed at how God can speak directly to your heart through the words of the scriptures.
